If you’ve been looking for a home, you know that it can be a frustrating process. There are a lot of things that you have to consider, and sometimes, you just can’t find a home that fits exactly what your family needs. In those cases, many people will decide to build their own custom home instead in order to put together that “perfect house.” So should you custom build? Ask yourself these questions before you make a final decision.
Am I custom building because I am able to, or am I doing so because I cannot find a home that fits my needs? This is important, because some people will just build for the sake of building. Not that that is not okay, but is it going to be more stress and strain than you will want or that you have time for? Are you in a place where your dream house is finally a possibility?
Will I be able to afford a custom built home, or will it cost more or cause financial burden on my family? Sometimes, custom built homes can be cheaper, especially if you have connections and/or you can do a lot of the work on your own. Other times, they can end up being a lot more expensive, especially if you have to hire a contractor to come in and take care of a majority of the work for you. Either way, can you afford it? Or will it make it more difficult for your family to make ends meet?
Do I have time to wait for my home to be finished? This is, perhaps, the most important question. Building a custom home takes a lot of time, and because of that, you have to be in a place where you’re not getting pushed out of your current living arrangements. Can you live with family or friends for awhile? Can you hold onto the apartment or home you’re currently renting until your home is done? If no, then you may want to reconsider.
Sometimes, it’s just better to custom build your home instead of getting one that has already been built for you. But, that being said, the decision is ultimately up to you and what your family needs out of the home that you’re moving into. Talk to your contractor and check out your options, then make a decision based on all of the factors that we’ve listed here.
